Wychwood Festival 2011
The Wychwood festival is a three day music festival held at Cheltenham Racecourse. The festival encourages families along with their children, with exciting workshops for children, a toddler’s area and walkabout circus performers and much more!

The Wychwood festival takes place on 3rd June to the 5th June, with camping available, if you don’t feel like camping, there are many hotels in Cheltenham to take your pick from.

Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival
The Cheltenham food and drink festival, 17th to the 19th June is home to chef’s specials and real ales and much more, being a well celebrated event, enjoyed by visitors from in and around the Cotswolds.
The festival is located on the Montpellier Gardens, located in the centre of Cheltenham town and lasts from 12pm to 7pm on the 17th, and Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th from 10am until 7pm.

Cheltenham Music Festival
Another one of Cheltenham’s ‘Power of four’ festivals, the Cheltenham Music Festival is Cheltenham’s third festival event, from the 29th June to the 10th July.
The Music festival plays host to musicians from the United Kingdom, as well as many world musicians and performers. From talks about famous musicians like Bach, and performances from Orchestras and one man bands, the Cheltenham music festival is perfect for music and culture enthusiasts.

Also happening in Cheltenham
There are also walking tours of Regency Cheltenham happening throughout summer, with your chance to learn interesting facts about the local history of Cheltenham. Another one to watch is Giffords Circus, which are performing at the Cheltenham and throughout the rest of the Cotswolds this summer.

Triple award win for Cheltenham Regency Hotel

The Cheltenham Regency Hotel is celebrating three outstanding awards acknowledging the high standards the hotel has achieved since its £2m refurbishment.

Following its recent AA inspection the Cheltenham Regency Hotel was awarded three AA stars and a rosette for the restaurant. With an overall quality score of 78 per cent, the hotel is now in the top four hotels in its category within the Cheltenham area.

The AA’s website states: “Recently refurbished throughout all areas, The Cheltenham Regency Hotel now provides high standards of quality and comfort. The large bedrooms, including several suites are very well equipped and ideal for the business or leisure guest. A good selection of carefully prepared dishes is available from either the extensive lounge/bar menu or a more formal offering utilising high quality produce can be found in the main restaurant.”

The hotel also recently beat of stiff competition from over 60 venues in the region when the internationally renowned networking group ‘BNI’, which has been regularly using the hotel for its networking events for the last few months, awarded the hotel ‘Best Venue’ in the South West Midlands Region.

A further award achieved was in recognition of the excellent standards being achieved in the Regency Restaurant under the guidance of head chef Robin Dudley (formerly of the renowned Queen’s Hotel in Cheltenham), a key member of Robin’s team won through to the final of the regional Chef v Chef competition that took place at Gloucester College at the end of February. Philip Oliviant, 29 years, has held the position of sous chef at the Regency Hotel for around nine months. He beat off competition from eight chefs from reputable local hotels and restaurants, including Monty’s brasserie, winning the over 23 year old section of the competition. Philip was given two hours to prepare and cook his two course menu from a mystery basket. His winning menu comprised: seared fillet of coley with creamed leeks, presse potatoes and a mussel and tarragon broth; followed by a baked chocolate fondant with almond pannacotta, apple and lemon sorbet and caramelised oats.

As the ‘Cheltenham’ winner, Philip will now go head to head with the winner of the Bristol/Bath region in the grand final when one of the chefs will be crowned the champion of the south west. The grand final will take place in Bath later this year.

Commenting on the recent successes, general manager Jay Clements said: “All of our recent awards and achievements, in particular the high quality score in the AA inspection combined with the rosette for the restaurant are a just reward for all of the effort and hard work put in by each and every member of the team. We see the awards as an excellent foundation on which to build an exciting future and look forward to welcoming our customers, both old and new, to try out our new award winning hotel.”

Cheltenham Races

Cheltenham Racecourse is known across the world as the home of National Hunt racing, offering 16 days of racing in the season.

In November, top class fields are attracted and features the race for the Paddy Power Gold Cup. The four-day meeting attracts thousands of visitors from Ireland, with a strong line-up of Irish horses challenging for honours. The highlight of the racing calendar is the National Hunt Festival in March, featuring the world famous Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Over the race week in March, over 250,000 people will be present to witness the action and experience the atmosphere. £500 million will be wagered on the outcome of the 26 races. With an astonishing average of just over £140,000 for each race in the Festival, the total prize money on offer in 2009 totals £3.67million.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the highlight of Wednesday, as the two best mile chasers produce a furious contest over the high Cheltenham fences. For many of the spectators, and those involved in Horse Racing, this is the most anticipated races of the year. The most entertaining in the modern era was the 2008 race was won by Master Minded, who gave one of the greatest performances ever seen over the Cheltenham fences.

On Thursday, also known as Ladies Day, the long distance hurdlers contest, The Ladbrokes World Hurdle takes place. Only the brave and the strong prevail in this three mile contest. The Ryanair Chase is another highlight on Thursday.

Every owner, trainer and jockey dreams of winning The Cheltenham Gold Cup. In 2008, trainer Paul Nicholls recorded a 1-2-3 as Denman led home Kauto Star and Neptune Collognes. Powerful Denman will once again, be looking to add his name in 2009 to those of legends Golden Miller and Best Mate as multiple winners of this prestigious event.
